Naturally Talented Program
The Naturally Talented Program (NTP) is an innovative initiative designed to celebrate
and explore the rich interconnections between the natural sciences, the arts, and
the humanities. This program provides a dynamic platform where both amateur and professional
artists, writers, and creators can express their creative visions inspired by nature
and scientific discovery. The NTP goal is to empower personal and professional growth,
encourage self-expression, help connect with others through shared interests, and
support emotional balance by providing a platform that promotes scientific knowledge
and creativity and showcases LSU talent.
The long-term impact that I hope it has its multifold, including to contribute to
LSU’s commitment to holistic education and community engagement; enhance cultural
and intellectual life on campus by nurturing and celebrating a vibrant, inclusive,
and engaged student body; and develop a sense of LSU pride and belonging.
Core Components
Join us for bi-monthly evening workshops where art meets natural history. Explore botanical illustration, scientific sketching, nature journaling, printmaking, sculpture, jewelry making, gyotaku, and many other artistic techniques using specimens from the museum’s collections as your models. Enjoy music, refreshments, and guided activities designed to spark creativity and reflection. These intimate, after-hours sessions invite artists of all levels to connect, create, and see nature’s beauty in a whole new way.
The Naturally Talented Award celebrates outstanding nature-inspired poetry and narrative that beautifully blends artistic expression with scientific insight. Presented annually, this award recognizes writers whose work deepens our understanding and appreciation of the natural world. Judged through a transparent and competitive process, the recipient is honored with a Certificate of Achievement, a $150 cash prize, and the publication of their work on our newsletter, website, social media channels, and our physical exhibits.
A curated showcase of poetry and short literary works inspired by the beauty and wonder of the natural world. Set within the museum’s iconic Hall of Birds, this reflective space invites visitors to pause, read, and connect with nature through the power of words.
The LSU Museum of Natural Science thanks the LSU Family Council for supporting this initiative.
