Scholarships and Financial Support
The Craft & Hawkins Department of Petroleum Engineering at LSU is committed to supporting top-performing students through a variety of scholarship opportunities, both for incoming freshmen and continuing students.
Qualified first-year students can apply for departmental scholarships valued at:
- $1,000 for the fall semester of freshman year, and
- $1,000 per semester for up to eight semesters (maximum of $8,000 total), subject to renewal.
To be eligible, applicants must:
- Have a minimum ACT Composite score of 28, and
- A minimum ACT Math score of 28 (or equivalent SAT scores).
- Enroll full-time in Petroleum Engineering at LSU.
- Maintain a 3.0 GPA and make satisfactory academic progress for renewal.
Freshmen are also encouraged to explore LSU College of Engineering scholarships, which may be awarded in addition to departmental funding.
Each fall, over 40 undergraduate scholarships — valued at $1,000 each — are awarded to continuing petroleum engineering students based on academic performance. These scholarships are renewable for the spring semesterprovided students:
- Maintain a 3.0 GPA, and
- Continue satisfactory progress toward their petroleum engineering degree.
Students are encouraged to apply for external scholarships supported by industry partners and professional organizations, including:
- The Gus Archie Memorial Scholarship (SPE Foundation): $5,000/year for up to four years.
- Joseph King McMahon Petroleum Engineering Scholarship and Chairman Tommy Taylor Memorial Scholarship (Texas Alliance of Energy Producers).
- Chevron & Society of Women Engineers Scholarships.
- American Indian Science and Engineering Society Scholarships.
- Great Minds in STEM Scholarships.
Note: Deadlines and application windows vary each year — students should check each organization's website for current dates and eligibility criteria.
To be considered for federal and state financial aid, including grants, loans, and some scholarships, students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

- Returning students may submit the Federal Renewal Application instead of a new FAFSA.
