Research Works

LSU faculty conduct research that touches the lives of every Louisiana citizen. As the state’s flagship university, our work focuses on finding solutions to some of the state’s largest problems, which span a wide range from chronic disease to coastal land loss. Through science, scholarship, and discovery, our faculty and students don’t just make a name for themselves – they make a difference for the people of our state.

Gravitational Waves Detected

For the first time, scientists have observed ripples in the fabric of spacetime, called gravitational waves, arriving at the earth from a cataclysmic event in the distant universe. This confirms a major prediction of Albert Einstein’s 1915 general theory of relativity and opens an unprecedented new window onto the cosmos.
